The SMART Steam Trap™ is a low maintenance Venturi steam trap for all
saturated steam applications with no moving and no failing parts. The
basic technology of the product, using the combination of the
condensate removal channel and the physics of the Venturi effect, has
been around for 30 years.
During the research and development process, the basic product was
improved by adding integral strainers, replaceable insert, and incorporating an inverted cone at the top of the insert. These improvements
greatly reduce the possibility of blocking the venturi channel during
operation and improve the reliability and maintainability of the trap for
the customer’s application
SMART Steam Traps™ will not fail open and they are
guaranteed for 20 years against any mechanical
failure and steam leakage. The SMART Steam Trap technology
operates using the Venturi principle, in which the pressure differential
across the insert results in flash steam that will control the condensate
flow rate without live steam leakage. The SMART Steam Trap operates
over a wide range of variable condensate loads, and is suitable for all
saturated steam applications.
The overall capacity of the trap is comprised
of two parts. First, a portion of the capacity is
controlled by the diameter of the condensate
removal channel. Second, a portion of the
capacity is controlled by the back pressure
that is generated inside the Venturi insert
using flash steam.
The replaceable insert has a reverse cone-shaped opening at the top leading to the Venturi section where the self-regulation process occurs based upon the physics of pressure change, a change in density, and energy conservation.
As the higher pressure condensate enters
the Venturi section, a small portion turns into
flash steam and creates a barrier to the live
steam. The flash steam is generated by the
combination of the pressure drop across the
channel and the difference in the density of
the steam compared to the condensate.
The higher the pressure differential across the trap, the more condensate is converted to flash steam. The combination of the channel diameter and the production of flash steam gives the Venturi trap its overall capacity and ability to handle varying condensate loads.
SMART Steam Traps typically save 2-5% of the steam energy, as compared to mechanical traps when brand new. Since mechanical traps have moving/wearable parts, they begin to degrade in performance as soon as they are placed in service. Over time, the SMART Steam Trap, with no moving parts, will continue to save energy while mechanical traps will lose energy from “Failed Open” steam traps, you will eliminate this condition by installing SMART Steam Traps.
In today’s world, SAFETY is at the top of everyone’s list. One of the most dangerous aspects of a steam system is“condensate induced water hammer”. This phenomenon will occur during start-up cycles of a steam system and will result in a very loud “knocking” noise and will stress steam system components such as valves, pressure reducers, and steam traps. Unlike mechanical traps, SMART Steam Traps have ZERO moving parts to fail open or fail closed. The only maintenance task is for the strainers (on SVT Models), which need to be inspected and cleaned periodically. The inspection and cleaning frequency will depend upon the water quality of the overall steam system.
